Documents
Made by people, for people.
Documents are shaped to fit the human eye and brain, so understanding them
starts with how people read.

Writing is only about 5,000 years old, and the brain has no part built for reading.
Modern humans (Homo sapiens) have existed for about 300,000 years. On a 24-hour clock, writing appears only in the last ~24 minutes, far too short for evolution to rewire the brain.

To read, the brain borrows the area that tells faces and objects apart.
借りている場所は左耳の後ろ、脳の下側(左側頭葉の下側)にあるVWFA(視覚性単語形状領域=文字の形を見分ける場所)です。 French neuroscientist Stanislas Dehaene calls this the "neuronal recycling hypothesis" (neurons are the brain's nerve cells). The borrowed spot, under the brain behind the left ear, is the VWFA (Visual Word Form Area), its letter-shape recognizer.

Letters changed to fit eyes made for seeing nature, not the other way around.
A 2006 study by American cognitive scientist Mark Changizi and colleagues: how often line junctions (L, T, Y…) appear in the world's writing systems closely matches how often they appear where object outlines meet in natural scenes.
