表 Tables

Tables are older than prose. People have always used them as a spatial tool — one where position itself carries meaning.

歴史History

Writing began with tables.

The oldest written records were not prose but table-like bookkeeping.

Around 3200 BCE (about 5,200 years ago), most clay tablets from Uruk — a city in Mesopotamia, in today's Iraq — recorded grain, livestock and rations for workers. The tablet was divided into boxes, with items and quantities set side by side. Stories and laws were written as prose only much later.

Humanity started writing to keep track of things — and naturally chose the grid.

Tables carried on as tools for calculation and management: Plimpton 322, a table of numbers from Babylonia (an ancient Mesopotamian kingdom); medieval astronomical tables for predicting where stars and planets would be; and the ledgers of double-entry bookkeeping (recording every transaction from two sides at once), set down by the Italian mathematician Luca Pacioli in 1494.

Brain science

The brain reads meaning from position.

The brain has cells that map where you are — organizing space is what it does best.

In the hippocampus (a part of the brain involved in memory) and the entorhinal cortex (its gateway), "place cells" fire when you are in a particular spot and "grid cells" measure space like graph paper. The discovery won the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Recent studies suggest the same system also helps organize relationships between abstract ideas, not just physical space.

We automatically group what is close, what looks alike, and what lines up.

These are findings of early-20th-century Gestalt psychology (the view that we perceive things as wholes, not as separate parts): the law of proximity (nearby things form a group), the law of similarity (things of the same shape or color belong together), and our tendency to see things lined up as one continuous run.

So a table explains itself: same column, same kind of value; same row, same subject.

Tables put these tendencies straight to work. Readers automatically take values stacked in a column as the same kind of thing, and values across a row as facts about the same subject.

People and machines

A table's meaning is written
in position, not in words.

People get it at a glance. Machines have to infer it from merged cells and where the headers sit.

"This column is the unit price" and "this row is Product A" are written nowhere in the table as words. Position carries the meaning, and the brain reads it automatically — a clear example of the point on the Documents page: documents are shaped for the human eye and brain.

Qty
製品AProduct A ¥1,200 30
You know "¥1,200" is Product A's unit price only from where it sits.
