Numbering &
indentation

Numbers and indentation make a document's places and nesting visible — for a brain that understands in hierarchies.

歴史History

Numbering long texts
is surprisingly recent.

The Bible got its chapter divisions in the early 13th century — and verse numbers only in 1551.

Verse numbers
Official-document numbering

In the age of scrolls there was little need to point to a passage by number. Once bound books spread, and printing gave every copy the same layout, specifying a place by number started to make sense.

Japanese official documents switch numbering style at every level — a postwar convention.

Changing the numbering style at each level of the hierarchy — 第1, 1, (1), ア, (ア) — became established as a convention for official (government) documents in postwar Japan. The kind of number alone tells you how deep you are.

We understand information
by nesting it in levels.

Because working memory is small, we tuck details under bigger headings to keep track.

Working memory — the mind's scratch pad — is small, holding only about four things at once. So we file details under higher-level groups, which makes the whole easier to grasp.

Indentation shows hierarchy as space: shifted right means “inside.”

Indentation (shifting the start of a line) turns hierarchy into position. It uses a finding of Gestalt psychology (the view that we perceive things as wholes): items whose left edges line up are seen as one group.
