古代ローマでは、キケロの秘書ティロが速記の記号をつくったと伝えられている。 In ancient Rome, Cicero's secretary Tiro is said to have created a shorthand system.

キケロは紀元前1世紀の古代ローマの政治家・弁論家です。その秘書ティロが、話を素早く書き留めるための速記の記号体系をつくったと伝えられています。 Cicero was a Roman statesman and orator of the 1st century BCE. His secretary Tiro is said to have devised a system of shorthand symbols for taking down speech quickly.

中世の写本では、よく使う単語を省略する記号が大量に使われた。「&」もその名残。 Medieval manuscripts were full of symbols that shortened common words — “&” is one survivor.

羊皮紙(羊などの皮でつくった、紙の代わりの書写材料)は高価で、手で書き写す手間も大きかったため、中世の写本ではよく使う単語を省略する記号が大量に使われました。「&」も、ラテン語で「と」を意味する「et」の2文字をつなげて書いたものが起源です。 Parchment (a writing material made from animal skin) was expensive and copying by hand was slow, so medieval manuscripts used a great many symbols to shorten common words. “&” itself began as the two letters of “et,” Latin for “and,” written joined together.

略語は負担を減らし、
仲間の印にもなる。
Abbreviations lighten the load —
and mark who's in the group.

繰り返し使う言葉を一つのまとまりとして扱うことで、読み書きの負担が減る。 Treating a phrase you use again and again as a single chunk lightens reading and writing.

頭の中で同時に扱える情報のまとまりには限りがあります(作業記憶)。長い言葉を短い一つのまとまりにすると、そのぶん読み書きや理解の負担が軽くなります。 The number of chunks we can hold in mind at once is limited (working memory). Turning a long phrase into one short chunk lightens reading, writing and understanding accordingly.

仲間内でだけ通じる言葉は、同じ集団に属していることを確かめ合う役割も持つ。 Words only insiders understand also serve to confirm that we belong to the same group.

社会心理学(人が集団の中でどう考え、どう行動するかを研究する学問)の観点では、仲間内でだけ通じる言葉は、同じ集団の一員であることを確認し合う働きを持っています。 From the viewpoint of social psychology (the study of how people think and act in groups), words that only insiders understand work to confirm that everyone belongs to the same group.

だから社内用語は、
説明されないまま
使われ続ける。
That's why jargon
goes on being used
without explanation.

負担を減らす便利さと、仲間の印という働きの両方があるから、社内用語は外部の人に説明されないまま文書に残りやすい。 Because it is both convenient and a badge of belonging, in-house jargon tends to stay in documents without ever being explained to outsiders.
