数式 Formulas

A formula compresses what the mind can't juggle onto paper — where eyes and hands can move it around.

歴史History

Formulas began as sentences.

A 9th-century algebra book wrote every equation and solution entirely in words.

A square and ten of its roots are equal to thirty-nine.”

The algebra book of al-Khwarizmi, a Persian mathematician (whose name gave us the word “algorithm”), was written in words like this. The “square” is the unknown squared; the “root” is the unknown itself. This style is called rhetorical algebra — algebra expressed in words.

Symbols crept in one by one, and about 400 years ago today's notation took shape.

  1. 1557=
Letters for values
  3. 1637x, y, z

In 1557 the Welsh mathematician Robert Recorde invented the equals sign “=”, because “no two things can be more equal” than a pair of parallel lines. Around 1591 the French mathematician François Viète systematized writing unknowns and coefficients (the fixed numbers they are multiplied by) as letters. In 1637 Descartes set today's habit of x, y, z for unknowns and a, b, c for known values.

Numerals, too, came to let position carry value — turning arithmetic into moving things on paper.

The Hindu–Arabic numerals (0–9), spread in Western Europe by the Italian mathematician Fibonacci in 1202, use place value: the same “9” means 900 or 90 depending on where it sits. Compare the Roman “MCMXCIV” with “1994”: once position carries value, written arithmetic becomes an operation on paper.

Brain science

The mind holds only
about four things at once.

We can keep only about four chunks of information in mind at the same time.

Working memory — the mind's scratch pad for holding information while we think — has room for only about four chunks, according to research by the American psychologist Nelson Cowan. That limit explains the shift from words to symbols.

A rearrangement that is hard in words becomes moving terms around on paper once it is written in symbols.

A square and ten of its roots equal thirty-nine x2+10x=39

Rearranging the sentence in your head quickly uses up working memory. Written in symbols, the whole equation enters the eye as a single chunk, and the work becomes moving terms around on paper.

Formulas are tools for moving thinking out of the head and onto paper, where eyes and hands can work on it.

Cognitive science (the study of how people perceive and think) studies such tools as “cognitive artifacts” and the “extended mind” — the view that part of thinking is carried out by things outside the head, such as paper and symbols.

A 2-D picture

A formula is also a two-dimensional picture.

Fractions stack, powers sit up and to the right — structure is shown by where symbols sit and how big they are.

Fraction (stacked)

Power (upper right)

Sum (range above and below)

A formula is not a line of text but a two-dimensional layout. Which part applies to which is shown by the position and size of the symbols, and the brain reads it visually as a whole.

Notation shaped thinking itself — Leibniz's “dy/dx” made calculus intuitive.

dydx=dydu·dudx

Calculus was devised at about the same time by Newton in England and Leibniz in Germany. Leibniz cared deeply about notation: in his “dy/dx”, the chain rule (differentiating a function inside another function) looks like cancelling fractions, so the calculation feels natural. That ease of use is said to have helped calculus flourish in continental Europe.

People and machines

A picture for people,
a single line for machines.

For a computer to handle a formula, its 2-D layout has to be rewritten as a single line of text or as a tree.

そのための書き方が、LaTeX(数式を文字の並びで書く組版の書き方)やMathML(数式を「木構造」=入れ子の関係で表すWebの標準)です。 That is what LaTeX (a typesetting language that writes formulas as a string of characters) and MathML (the web standard that represents a formula as a tree of nested parts) are for. They spell out, piece by piece, the above-below and upper-right relationships people read at a glance.
