Technical drawings lean on the brain's knack for seeing solids in flat lines — which is why only trained readers can read them.
歴史History
Technical drawing began as a military secret.
Showing a solid as front, top and side views was systematized in late-18th-century France.
It comes from descriptive geometry — the mathematics of representing solids precisely in flat drawings — systematized by the French mathematician Gaspard Monge. At first it was a military secret used to design fortifications, and it was only made public at the end of the 1790s.
Once the Industrial Revolution split parts across factories, drawings had to let anyone build exactly the same shape.
When the Industrial Revolution (the 18th–19th-century shift to machine-based manufacturing) spread the parts of one product across different factories, drawings had to produce the same shape no matter who read them. Line types (solid, dashed and so on) and the way dimensions are written were standardized as a result.
Brain science
The brain tries to rebuild solids from flat lines.
What the eye receives is flat — the brain infers depth from how outlines meet and overlap.
The image on the retina (the light-sensing layer at the back of the eye) is flat to begin with, so the brain has evolved to infer depth from how outlines cross and overlap. Technical drawings rely on this ability.
Combining a front and a side view in your head takes training — so drawings became a notation for specialists.
Anyone senses depth from outlines naturally, but combining separately drawn front and side views into one solid in your mind takes training. That is why technical drawings are a notation only trained readers can read.
