What GxP means

GxP is shorthand for the “good practice” rules that govern regulated life sciences work. The “x” stands for the activity: manufacturing, laboratory, clinical, distribution and others. Each set of rules has the same goal: products that are safe and effective, and records that prove how they were made, tested and handled.

GxP compliance means meeting every good practice rule that applies to your activities, and being able to show it with complete, trustworthy records.

The main GxP areas

AreaCoversKey US rules and guidance2025 to 2026 change
GMP (manufacturing)Production, testing and release of drugs and biologics21 CFR 210 and 211; ICH Q7, Q9, Q10EU consultation on Chapter 4, Annex 11 and new Annex 22 (AI), July to October 2025 (European Commission)
GLP (laboratory)Nonclinical safety studies21 CFR 58No major US change in this period
GCP (clinical)Clinical trials and data21 CFR 50, 56, 312; ICH E6ICH E6(R3) final January 6, 2025; FDA posted it September 9, 2025 (UW Clinical Trials)
GDP (distribution)Storage, transport and supply chain securityDSCSA; state licensing; USP chaptersSmall dispenser DSCSA exemption extended to November 27, 2027 (Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney)
GVP (pharmacovigilance)Adverse event collection and reporting21 CFR 314.80, 600.80FDA’s unified Adverse Event Monitoring System launched March 2026
Cross-cutting: data and systemsElectronic records and signatures21 CFR Part 11EU Annex 11 revision on “enhanced requirements for the lifecycle management of computerised systems”

What all GxP areas have in common

  • Written procedures that people follow and records that prove it
  • Trained, qualified people
  • Quality oversight independent of the work being checked
  • Data integrity: records that are attributable, legible, contemporaneous, original and accurate, plus complete, consistent, enduring and available (ALCOA+)
  • Validated systems for anything that creates or stores GxP data
  • Deviation, investigation and CAPA processes that close the loop
  • Risk management to decide where effort goes

These shared elements are why companies increasingly run one GxP quality system with area-specific procedures, instead of separate silos.

The 2025 and 2026 updates that matter

ICH E6(R3) for clinical trials. ICH released the final version on January 6, 2025, with more emphasis on quality management systems, a “fit for purpose” approach and “the use of electronic systems, including digital health technologies” (CITI Program). The EU made it effective July 23, 2025. FDA posted the final version on September 9, 2025, without a separate compliance date (UW Clinical Trials).

EU GMP documentation, computerized systems and AI. The European Commission consulted on revised Chapter 4, revised Annex 11 and a new Annex 22 from July 7 to October 7, 2025. Annex 22 “establishes requirements for the use of AI and machine learning in the manufacturing” of medicines (European Commission). Final texts were not yet adopted at the time of writing.

DSCSA for distribution. FDA extended exemptions for qualifying small dispensers from November 27, 2026 to November 27, 2027; the extension “does not suspend existing DSCSA requirements” (Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney).

GMP enforcement. In FY2025, the top drug citation was 21 CFR 211.22(d), quality unit procedures not written or not followed, with 243 observations (GMP Insiders).

GxP compliance checklist

  • Map which GxP areas apply to each site, function and partner
  • One quality manual with area-specific procedures
  • Procedures updated for ICH E6(R3) where clinical work applies
  • Computerized systems inventoried, risk-assessed and validated
  • Part 11 and data integrity controls verified
  • Training matrix covers every GxP role
  • Deviations, CAPA and change control shared across areas
  • Supplier and vendor oversight by GxP area
  • EU Annex 11 and Annex 22 drafts tracked for final adoption
  • Internal audits scheduled across all GxP areas

Check GxP procedures against the rules that apply

GxP gaps hide where areas meet: a lab procedure that ignores GCP data rules, a distribution SOP that misses DSCSA, a system validation that skips Part 11. AskDona reviews procedures and records against 21 CFR, ICH guidelines, EU GMP or your own standards, flags gaps and contradictions, and cites the passage behind every finding.

Run a sample GxP procedure assessment on one SOP set. AskDona shows the evidence; your quality team decides.

FAQ

What does GxP stand for? Good practice, where the “x” is the activity, such as manufacturing (GMP), laboratory (GLP), clinical (GCP) or distribution (GDP).

Who needs GxP compliance? Companies and partners that make, test, study, store or distribute regulated medical products, including CDMOs, CROs, labs and logistics providers.

Is Part 11 part of GxP? Yes. Part 11 sets FDA requirements for electronic records and signatures used in GxP work.

What is ICH E6(R3)? The updated international GCP guideline, finalized in January 2025 and posted by FDA in September 2025 (UW Clinical Trials).

What is EU GMP Annex 22? A proposed new annex setting requirements for AI and machine learning in medicine manufacturing (European Commission).
